Climate-neutral into the future

GEMÜ looks ahead and is therefore actively committed to the environment. Its goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (in t CO2 / FTE) by 25% between 2020 and 2030. They are on track at GEMÜ GmbH, because for the second time in a row, the golden quality certificate for CO2 neutrality was issued by Swiss Climate AG.

The analysis of Swiss Climate AG recorded an increase in emissions caused by GEMÜ of 3.3% in 2021 compared to the previous year. The rising emissions development is directly related to the increasing sales development at the site and the associated increase in personnel.

Consumables were the largest source of emissions in 2021. As the pandemic subsided, the number of visitors increased, which meant that consumables such as disposable workwear were used more often. The second largest source of emissions could be attributed to commuting.  New hires and the reduction in the number of home office days in individual divisions led to an increase in emissions here.

Finally, emissions from business travel, waste generation, paper and printing, and chemicals are also attributable to the company's growth and the end of the pandemic.

It is worth mentioning that the electricity consumed, for example, comes from renewable sources and thus accounts for a very small share of total emissions (1%).

Actions to make commuting to work more environmentally friendly were implemented as follows: Employees were provided with a half-fare card. Charging stations for e-bikes and electric cars can be used free of charge. GEMÜ proudly participates in the annual Bike-To-Work bicycle campaign with its employees.

GEMÜ will further reduce its own emissions at the Swiss site. Discussions are currently being held with the municipality of Emmen to promote further development and thereby easier access to public transport. Company vehicles are being converted to hybrid or purely electric vehicles. Furthermore, when machines are replaced, close attention is paid to ensuring that they are designed to be energy-efficient. These examples and many others show that GEMÜ is strongly committed to continuing to make an important contribution to the protection of our environment.

The Gold Standard awarded climate project is located in the north of Bulgaria. 90,000 tons of CO2 emissions are saved per year with this regenerative system. Sawdust is produced as a "waste product" during paper manufacturing. In the "Renewable Energy from Sawdust" project, this biomass is used to generate steam, which in turn is used as an energy source for the raw material production of paper. This climate protection project is one of the only projects in Europe to have been awarded the Gold Standard.
